Prevent Printing Issues Caused by Moist Paper
During spring and summer months, or in naturally humid environments, excess moisture in the air can be absorbed by printer paper. High humidity can cause paper to become damp, soft, and less stable, leading to a variety of printing problems. Proper storage and handling can help maintain print quality and reduce equipment issues.
Common Problems Caused by Humid Paper
• Paper jams due to softened sheets
• Sheets sticking together or feeding multiple pages
• Wavy or rippled paper
• Smudged or blurred print output
• Slow drying ink or toner adhesion issues
• Misfeeds or inconsistent paper pickup
• Reduced print sharpness and quality
How to Prevent Humidity-Related Issues
- Keep Paper Sealed
Store paper in its original packaging until it is needed to prevent moisture absorption. - Store Paper in a Dry Area
Avoid storing paper near:
• Open windows
• Doors exposed to outdoor air
• Basements or damp areas
• Humidifiers
Keep paper in a climate-controlled area whenever possible. - Use Dehumidification if Needed
In high humidity environments, consider using a dehumidifier to maintain stable conditions. - Fan Paper Before Loading
Lightly fan the paper stack to separate sheets and reduce sticking. - Avoid Overloading the Tray
Load only up to the recommended fill line to prevent feeding issues. - Rotate Paper Stock
Use older paper first and avoid leaving opened reams exposed to humid air for extended periods.
Proper Paper Loading
Step 1 — Align the Paper
Ensure the paper stack is straight and evenly aligned.
Step 2 — Load Below the Fill Line
Do not exceed the MAX fill indicator in the tray.
Step 3 — Adjust Paper Guides
Slide guides so they rest gently against the paper without bending it.
If Paper Appears Damp or Wavy
- Remove the paper from the tray
- Fan the sheets to reduce moisture buildup
- Allow paper to sit in a dry environment before reuse
- If problems persist, replace with a fresh, sealed ream
- If curled paper must be used Reload the paper carefully into the tray according to diagram below
Recommended Print Environment
For best results, maintain:
Temperature: 20–24°C (68–75°F)
Humidity: 40–60%
High humidity can significantly impact paper performance. Keeping paper dry and properly stored is essential for consistent, high-quality printing.
